Bilinguismo no Brasil: significado e expectativas
Marcello Marcelino………………………………………………………………………….. 1 [ artigo ] ABSTRACT: Bilingualism grows in Brazil as a phenomenon and as a
tendency. Sometimes, though, this may come across as a new trend to be followed because it is very happening. In this paper, I analyze the context in which bilingualism grows, the seeming reasons that it is still growing and where it seems to be heading. Throughout the paper, I refer to the (i) concept of bilingualism, which is highly debatable, (ii) the ideal characteristics of a bilingual school in the Brazilian context, and (iii) the linguistic aspects of using an L2 for instruction, which are usually left out of the loop. Towards the end of the paper, I bring in a reflection on the importance of providing the child in the bilingual context with optimal input as a means of maximizing the chances of a learner to acquire and develop an L2 that is as close to the target language as possible.

Bilinguismo: diferentes definições, diversas implicações
Elizabete Villibor Flory & Maria Thereza Costa Coelho de Souza……………. 23 [ artigo ] ABSTRACT: There isn’t a universally accepted definition for Bilingualism. Some concepts of Bilingualism are presented, starting with general definitions before exploring definitions based on specific criteria which can be combined, such as “age of second language acquisition”, “maintenance of the first language”, “status of the languages”. The way each criterium can lead to different consequences in specific contexts is also taken into account. It is important to specify the type of Bilingualism when conducting, interpreting and presenting researches on this subject. The same individual can be classified according to different criteria and his bilingualism can be in a state of constant transformation.

Influências do bilingüismo precoce sobre o desenvolvimento infantil: vantagens, desvantagens ou diferenças?
Elizabete Villibor Flory & Maria Thereza Costa Coelho de Souza…………….41[ artigo ] ABSTRACT: Early Bilingualism influences Child Development, but not in a simple and unilateral way. For the purpose of this article, research works on the subject were subdivided into three groups, according to the performances of monolinguals and bilinguals. One group points to advantages concerning anticipation in specific aspects of the cognitive development, such as inhibitory control and metalinguistic awareness. The second group points to differences in specific aspects, such as code-switching. The third group points to disadvantages that are related to the context of the Bilingualism, the valorization of the languages, and the proficiency of the subject, but not to the Bilingualism per se.

Bilinguismo e educação de surdos
Maria Cristina da Cunha Pereira & Maria Inês da Silva Vieira………………………62 [ artigo ] ABSTRACT: This article presents some considerations about the specificities of bilingualism in the education of deaf people. Because they were born into hearing families, a lot of deaf children grow up without an established language, since the majority language spoken by the family is inaccessible to the deaf children and the sign language which is accessible to them is unknown or even rejected by the hearing family. The proposal of a bilingual education, that contemplates the Brazilian Sign Language as the first language, and the Portuguese Language, in the written modality as the second language, is presented and discussed in this article

Reflexões sobre a atividade de elaboração de um dicionário bilíngue
Marília de Nazaré Ferreira…………………………………………………………………………………..68 [ artigo ] ABSTRACT: Investigations about the lexicon have been the object of several research fields, such as Theoretical Linguistics, Psycholinguistics and Automated Natural Language Processing, which aim to define it through observations of its inherent characteristics. This work briefly approaches a subject related to the analysis of the lexicon: the development of a bilingual dictionary on one of Brazil’s indigenous languages. It is known that the development of a dictionary is an efficient way to describe a language, and that such task allows us to observe, for instance, how the lexical entries are specified regarding its content.

Aprendizagem de língua italiana em TANDEM via MSN messenger: histórias de aprendizagem de língua e de construção de identidade
Cássia Regina Migliorança…………………………………………………………………………………..81[ artigo ] ABSTRACT: This study is aimed at presenting and describing the linguistic-discursive knowledge constructed in an experience of teaching-learning in Tandem practice via MSN Messenger, and the stories of construction of identity that emerged in this practice. The study was based in assumptions about teaching-learning languages in Tandem practice and in conceptions of language and identity. The analysis was developed from the composition of meanings, according to Ely, Vinz, Downing and Anzul (2001) and made it possible to establish a relation between the culture related to the studied language, the construction of linguistic-discursive knowledge and the reconstruction of personal identity.

L2 speech production in the classroom: the effects of treating speaking in its own right
Eduardo H. Diniz de Figueiredo & Mailce Borges Mota………………………….101 [ artigo ] ABSTRACT: In this study we investigate the effects of a 14-week instructional treatment, in which L2 speaking is addressed in terms of its specificities, on L2 learners’ oral fluency. Twenty-four L2 learners at the upper-intermediate level of proficiency, assigned to an experimental group or to a control group, participated in the study. Speech performance was elicited by means of descriptive, narrative, and interview tasks on a pre- post-test basis. Results of statistical analyses show that there is trend toward gains in oral fluency after the treatment.

Um aluno formando de Letras (inglês): quais são suas crenças acerca do processo de ensino/aprendizagem de língua inglesa?
Tatiana Diello Borges; Neuda Alves do Lago & Vitalino Garcia Oliveira …..125 [ artigo ] ABSTRACT: The aim of this paper is to present a senior student’s beliefs about the process of English teaching/learning in the Modern Languages course. The research has as theoretical framework studies in the area of teaching/learning foreign languages which focus on beliefs. As methodology, the case study was chosen and the following instruments for data collection were used: semi-open questionnaire, narrative and semi-structured interview. The results suggest these participant beliefs: grammar is not relevant in that process, group work is quite important, and the good language learner is the one that “pays attention to his teacher”.
